What it means

Safety listing is not a single government mark: it is a certification issued by an NRTL against UL or CSA standards. Retailers, insurers and electrical inspectors commonly require it, and the mark must match the exact product and factory.

Applies to

  • Mains-powered IoT devices, hubs and chargers
  • Battery-powered products with charging circuits
  • Components such as power supplies inside a device

What it does not cover

  • Radio approval, which is the FCC or ISED scope
  • Performance, privacy or cybersecurity of the product
  • Software updates that change the safety-relevant design

Verification checklist

  • Identify the correct UL or CSA standard for the product
  • Submit samples and critical components to the NRTL
  • Accept the factory inspection programme for listed products
  • Report design changes that affect safety before shipping them
