Mandatory or voluntary

Radio approvals such as FCC, CE or Anatel are gatekeepers: without them a product cannot be legally sold. Marks such as Matter, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED or Energy Star are voluntary but are frequently required by platforms, retailers or buyers.

Product or company

Some schemes certify a device, others certify an organisation. ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 describe how a company runs its service, while FCC, UL or Qi certification apply to a specific product and factory.

Always confirm the scope

Certificates list the exact model, hardware version, firmware baseline and standard edition tested. A certificate for a module is not a certificate for the finished device, and a redesign can void the original scope.
