What it means

The first digit covers solids and dust, the second covers water. Ratings apply to the complete enclosure as tested, not to the electronics inside, and can be voided if the housing is opened or seals are reused.

Applies to

  • Outdoor cameras and doorbells
  • Sensors exposed to humidity or rain
  • Portable devices with sealing requirements

What it does not cover

  • Impact resistance, which is covered by IK ratings
  • Corrosion resistance and salt spray
  • Continued protection after repair or battery replacement

Verification checklist

  • Select the rating required by the installation environment
  • Test the finished product, including seals and gaskets
  • Include cable glands and connectors in the assessment
  • State the test conditions in marketing material
