What it means

Rather than prescribing construction, IEC 62368-1 requires the designer to identify energy sources and provide safeguards. It is the safety standard that most smart speakers, hubs, cameras and chargers are tested against.

Applies to

  • Audio and video equipment
  • IT and communication equipment
  • Devices with mains or battery power and a charging interface

What it does not cover

  • Radio approval
  • Medical or automotive safety standards
  • Cybersecurity of the device or cloud

Verification checklist

  • Classify energy sources and required safeguards
  • Check component ratings and creepage and clearance distances
  • Test abnormal and single-fault conditions
  • Review the standard edition used in each market certificate
