What it means

EMC is assessed separately from radio and safety. Products that contain radios are usually covered by the Radio Equipment Directive, which combines radio and EMC requirements in one file.

Applies to

  • Electrical and electronic equipment with possible emissions
  • Devices with switching power supplies or motors
  • Equipment intended for residential, commercial or industrial environments

What it does not cover

  • Radio spectrum authorisation
  • Electrical safety
  • Immunity performance guarantees in every real installation

Verification checklist

  • Identify whether RED or EMC Directive applies
  • Test emissions and immunity against harmonised standards
  • Document the assessment and any applicable standards
  • Include EMC statements in the declaration and manual
